In 1997, The Search Institute released a study which showed that there are 40 developmental assets that (qualities or characteristics of life) that help build healthy young people. The more assets a young person had in his or her life, the more likely that person would be healthy in body, mind, and spirit. Of these assets, 5 relate specifically to school. These assets are: 1) School provides a caring, encouraging environment 2) Parents are actively involved in helping young person succeed in school. 3) School provides clear rules and consequences. 4) Young person is actively engaged in learning. 5) Young person cares about his or her school. In addition, 16 deal indirectly with school (peer relationships, relationships with other adults, homework time, etc.) and still others deal with religious communities and values that are taught in school. Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School provides a positive framework for the inclusion of these assets. Christ Our Rock is helping its students achieve these assets and, therefore, a healthier, more productive life! |
The Governor and Legislature of Illinois has recently passed new graduation requirements. Research shows that students need a rigorous high school academic education in order to be prepared for college and life. Christ Our Rock already met the standards that have recently been passed. Christ Our Rock students are challenged academically and enrolled in a college preparatory program.
The National Study of Youth and Religion reports that religion among U.S. 12th graders is positively related to participation in constructive youth activities. In addition, those who participate in religious study and activities seem to be less likely to be involved in many delinquent and risky behaviors. In other words, continued years spent participating in religious study and activities are clearly associated with safer, healthier, more constructive lifestyles for U.S. teenagers.
It is estimated that 75% of full-time church workers new to their profession in the past 5 years are products of Lutheran high schools. Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School will assist in encouraging our youth to enter full-time church work. Students not Spirit-lead in that direction will develop an understanding of how they as lay-persons can have a huge positive impact on our local churches.
Our public schools continue to face the challenges of decreasing morality and mandated tolerance of alternate lifestyles and all religious beliefs. Government bureaucracy and court decisions have literally “tied the hands” of our school leaders in the fight to keep Christian morals at the center of education. At Christ Our Rock, Biblical principles will be interwoven with our entire academic and extra-curricular program. Martin Luther said, “I advise no one to place his child where the scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution that does not unceasingly pursue the study of God’s word becomes corrupt.”
